Doppler Myocardial Imaging, A Textbook

By George R. Sutherland, Liv Hatle, Piet Claus Jan D’hooge and Bart Bijnens.

This book describes the principles and clinical application of Tissue Doppler Imaging and Deformation Imaging (Strain and Strain-rate Imaging).

Besides practical tips on how to acquire and analyse the data, a lot of pathophysiological principle and basic myocardial physiology, related to cardiac function and deformation, is discussed in depth.

Doppler Myocardial Imaging (also called Tissue Doppler Imaging or Myocardial Velocity Imaging) is a new quantitative approach to the assessment of regional myocardial function. Based on local velocity estimation, the technique allows the measurement of regional strain and strain rate parameters. This book reviews the development of Doppler Myocardial Imaging over the last 10 years and attempts to define its current and future roles within clinical echocardiography.

The physical principles involved and the correlative experimental data, which underpin its clinical use, will be reviewed.

Some of the topcis discussed include:

Normal Values for myocardial velocities, strain and strain-rates; Reproducibility/Problems/Pitfalls; Ischemia, Infarction and Viability and related Post-systolic Thickening; Diastolic Function; Cardiomyopathies and Transplantation; Arrhythmias; Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT); Quantitative Stress Echo; The Right Ventricle and its role in Congenital Heart Disease.
